Kansas last raised the minimum wage back in 2009 to $7.25 an hour. This isn’t enough and most jobs know this. They don’t pay $7.25 an hour at most places anymore. Most places in Kansas start at $10 to $13 an hour. This is better but whenever neighboring states have a $13 set Minimum wage. This low wage in concerning, especially when other states have prospered due to increasing the wage. Increasing the wage now to $14 an hour won’t drastically change how businesses operate, if there already paying a little below that.
Minimum wage workers generally have to spend every dollar they earn. That means any increase in their wages goes straight into boosting the revenues of businesses in their communities, helping to support the economy.
We advocate for HB 2018 – Increasing the minimum wage to $17.25 over 10 years, which was put forward by Rep. Aaron Coleman. It however died in committee. This bill also addressed tipped and gratuity workers.
