By SDUSA, KS – how students can get active in civics by being allowed on school boards
The current system is lacking and students are falling behind while our teachers are underpaid. It’s time for robust student-focused reforms that seek to elevate students and schools.
This starts with properly funding K-12 and making sure that state has the money for schools, to which are vital to Kansas society. SDUSA, KS wants to see schools funded on a ten year plan, where money is allocated from regulation of big companies in Kansas, rather then the tax payers.
This will also allow Kansas school boards needs to raise teacher pay or benefits ,as a way to thank our educators for the work they do in shaping the future. Students will remember a good educator there whole life long. Beyond good pay KS should give back to the educators by offering student loan forgiveness and other initiatives that allow teachers to focus on teaching, instead of survival.
For far too long have students been on the receiving end of the spectrum of politics, but it’s time that students are allowed to speak for themselves and what they need or desire. This starts at home with the parent and continues over to the teachers. Both of which should be working together for the betterment of students.
SDUSA, KS pushes for a student ran boards like students electing representives to talk to or be on the school board. We want not only students on this board but also parents and educators. This will be a new democratic body that is a mix of politicians, parents, teaches, and students.
Students can run for this position based on behavior and academic reports, while parents can form an elected committee with teachers giving input to both of them.
Each grade gets a male, female, and nonbinary representation but it’s the grades represented are rotating meaning one year it’s 1,3,5,7,9,11 and the next it’s 2,4,6,8,10,12 that way there’s only 18 students. Terms are for the student’s year in that grade, elections are held annually, and consecutive terms are allowed based on good behavior and academic report. Students are encouraged to participate regardless of demographicical background.
The elections are held in schools ,while they are prompted to encourage campaigns and other civics related to elections. The elections would mimic real world parties forming based on issue, not character. This would be a learning opportunity for those 18 students in learning how to operate a navigate a campaign and what running is a election is like. The students get real world experience and Preschool and kindergarten can be represented by a coalition of teachers and parents. This world be a district wide event and would be treated as such.
All four fractions would form this new board. You’d have the politicians running the day to day operations of the board with the students, parents and teachers being able to sit in a debate policy. That way it’s not all behind closed doors and one party doesn’t have exclusivity.
SDUSA,KS is advocating for student rights and participation in there education where all three parties (the teacher, student, and parent) can work towards the same education goal. In powering all three we can build a more efficient educational system.
By funding school and making sure all parties are represented Kansas can make K-12 more transparent and democratic.
